Paris: French footballer and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been convicted in a controversial sex tape case. Kareem Benzema was sentenced to one year in jail and fined Rs 6.5 crore. The court sentenced the four accused along with Kareem Benzema.

The incident related to the case took place six years ago. The sex tape against French footballer Mathieu Valbuena is alleged to have been made by Benzema to blackmail the player. The incident took place in June 2015. Kareem Benzema was forced to pay money to the group that blackmailed Valbuena, raising suspicions that Benzema had links to them.

Neither Benzema nor Matthew Valbuena, a party to the case, were present at the hearing. Valbuena is currently a player for the Greek club Olympicos. At the same time, legal sources say that Benzema will not have to spend time in jail because of the suspended sentence. Benzema reiterated in court that he was not involved in the case. He claims he tried to help Valbuen. Meanwhile, French media reported that Benzema’s lawyer had said he would appeal if a court order was issued.

At the same time, the two were expelled from the French team in 2015 following a controversy. With this, Benzema was out of the French team for five years. The star missed out on major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He finally returned to the national team for the 2021 Euro Cup.
