The film is written and directed by Rishabh Shetty and he plays the lead role. The film tells the story of Kanthapura in the 19th century. The film is produced by KGF producers Hombale Films. Saptami Gowda is the heroine. Kishore, Deepak Rai Panaji, Achyut Kumar and Pramod Shetty are the other stars, Kantara is also the highest rated Indian film on IMDB with a rating of 9.4 out of 10.

In an interview to DNA, Rishabh Shetty said that although he knew Kantara would succeed, he never expected such a pan-Indian success and reception for the film. Rishabh said, “I never expected such success. The concept on which the film is based, the conflict between humans and nature is a universal theme. As my story is deeply rooted and local, I thought it would be fresh and successful for the audience, but never expected it to be so well received,” said Rishabh.

Kantara hits theaters on September 30. After the film became a huge hit, it was dubbed and released in other languages. It was released in Hindi on 14 October, Tamil and Telugu on 15 October and Malayalam on 20 October.
