KBS News Reveals Confusion Over Busan Savings Bank Investigation
(Seoul = Yonhap News) By Hwang Jae-ha – KBS recently acknowledged that it had caused confusion among viewers due to a report about President Yoon Seok-yeol’s alleged involvement in clearing the Busan Savings Bank investigation during his time as a prosecutor. The news outlet explained the situation during its News 9 program on the afternoon of the 8th, clarifying that the report was based on a Newstapa article and included excerpts from a recording of Kim Man-bae and Shin Hak-rim. However, upon reviewing the full transcript released by Newstapa, it was discovered that certain parts had been removed and edited, leading to viewer confusion.
On March 7 of last year, Newstapa released a voice recording file involving Mr. Kim, a major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management, where he alleged that President Yoon and former special prosecutor Park Young-soo had covered up the Busan Savings Bank investigation in 2011. However, it was later revealed that Shin Hak-rim, the former chairman of the National Press Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions who provided the recording to Newstapa, had received payment from Mr. Kim in September 2021. This raised doubts about the authenticity of the report.
In response to the controversy, Newstapa released the full unedited recording on the 7th. Meanwhile, other news outlets, including MBC, had also reported on the story, contributing to the confusion among viewers.
As KBS strives for accurate reporting, it apologizes for any confusion caused and emphasizes the importance of verifying sources and providing complete information to the public.
