Despite notifications from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the police to ban the assembly, the Public Transport Union of the National Democratic Trade Union Federation held a rally of 10,000 people in downtown Seoul on the weekend. The city of Seoul reported all the protesters to the police.

According to the police on the 28th, the public transport union gathered near Yeouido Station on Subway Line 5 in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul from 2 pm the day before and held a rally. It has been two weeks since the Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) gathered at the intersection of Dongdaemun Station in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 13th and held the National Workers’ Congress, and the number of participants is about 10,000.

Earlier, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the police notified the union of the ban on the assembly citing concerns about the spread of the infectious disease, and the Seoul Administrative Court also rejected the union’s application to suspend the assembly ban notice, but the union pushed ahead with the assembly. Currently, in the metropolitan area, up to 99 people who have not been vaccinated, and up to 499 people can hold a rally if they include those who have completed inoculation or those who have tested negative for gene amplification (PCR).

At the rally, the union demanded the abolition of irregular workers, the provision of good jobs, and the overall expansion of the freight safety system. “The promises the current government promised, such as the minimum wage of 10,000 won and the conversion of non-regular workers to regular positions, have not been properly fulfilled,” said Hyun Jeong-hee, chairman of the Public Transport Union. I will go ahead without backing down.”

As a large number of people gathered at the rally, there was traffic congestion in the Yeouido area. However, the union did not march after the rally, and there was no clash between the protesters and the police.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on charges of violating the Infectious Disease Prevention Act. The police consider all large-scale assemblies held by the Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) to be illegal, and are responding sternly, such as organizing a dedicated investigation team.

An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said, “We plan to request the attendance of the organizers and major participants and promptly investigate through the analysis of evidence.”
