Kenya’s World Championships in Athletics Federations (AK) said long-distance athlete Agnes Jebet Tirop was found stabbed to death at her home on the 13th (local time).

“Tyrop was found dead this morning at his home in Itten, west,” AK said in a statement. “It is suspected that his husband stabbed him in the stomach,” AFP reported.

Police said they were looking for Tyrop’s husband, Emanuel Rotich, as a suspect. “The suspect called Tyrop’s parents and said he had done something wrong,” said Keiyo Northern Police Chief Tom Macory.

Tyrop, 25, represented Kenya in the 5000m event at the last Tokyo Olympics and crossed the finish line in 4th place with a time of 14:39.62.

Last month, she won the women’s single 10km marathon in Germany with a world record of 30 minutes and 01 seconds, shortening the previous record by 28 seconds for the first time in 19 years.

Tyrop previously also won the 2015 World Cross-Country Championships. In 2017 and 2019, he won bronze medals in the 10000m event at the World Championships in Athletics.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his condolences in a statement saying, “It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate and very sad to lose a young and promising athlete who has given our country glory for outstanding achievements on the world stage.”
