The tribunal sentenced husband Shaheen to death for killing his wife Riva for dowry in the capital’s Mirpur about four years ago.
On Monday (February 13), Judge Begum Mafroza Parveen of Dhaka’s Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal-8 announced the verdict in the presence of the accused. In addition to the death sentence, he was fined one lakh rupees.
The lawyer of the state side of the concerned court Rezaul Karim informed the matter.
It is known that Riva’s wife was killed on May 9, 2019 due to non-payment of dowry of two lakh rupees. In this incident, the victim’s mother Sahida Khatun filed a case at Mirpur Model Police Station as the plaintiff. After investigating the case, DB Police Inspector MA Rahi filed the charge sheet in the court. On September 6, 2021, he framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.
During the trial of the case, the court heard the testimony of 13 out of 22 witnesses.
