A moment of pride and patriotism filled the air as Kim Ha-yoon proudly stood atop the podium, draped in the gold medal after her triumphant victory in the women’s over 78 kg judo competition held on the 26th.

With Kim’s historic win, today marked the final day of individual competition for the Korean judo team. Prior to this momentous occasion, they had not secured a single gold medal. Even heavyweight contender Kim Min-jong from Yangpyeong County Office failed to advance to the finals, placing him at risk of not attaining the coveted gold in the individual event of the Asian Games for the first time in history. However, Ha-yoon Kim’s remarkable achievement saved Korean judo from the brink and etched her name into the annals of history.

The road to victory was far from easy for Kim Ha-yoon. Having previously faced Xu Shiyan twice in international competitions, she had suffered defeat on both occasions.

Nevertheless, undeterred by her past losses, Kim exuded an unwavering confidence. Reflecting on her previous encounters with her opponent, she stated, “The last time I lost, it was because I had the upper hand but let it slip away. This time, I analyzed the game thoroughly and played with conviction, knowing I could emerge victorious.”

Despite the odds stacked against her, Kim Ha-yoon demonstrated remarkable courage as she battled through injury. Having injured her left knee just a week before the competition, the setback posed a significant threat to Kim’s specialization in leg and leg curling techniques. Furthermore, the lack of ample training after the injury exacerbated the challenge.

With determination and resilience, Kim defied the odds, stating, “I played the game with taping on, which was demanding. However, I had complete faith in my abilities and knew that I could overcome the pain once I stepped onto the mat.”

Looking towards the future, Kim Ha-yoon revealed her lofty aspirations. Winning the Olympics stands as her ultimate goal, as she stated, “While the Asian Games is a prestigious competition, my sights are set on an Olympic gold medal.”
