The National Police Agency announced on the 26th that at the 89th Interpol General Assembly held in Istanbul, Turkey from the 23rd to the 25th, President Kim Jong-yang had resigned after a three-year term.

The UAE’s Chief of Police, Alaish, was elected as the new head of the country.

After serving as a member of the executive committee in 2012 and serving as the vice-president of Asia from 2015, President Kim took the lead in overcoming the crisis within the organization by acting as acting president due to the sudden resignation of the former president in 2018.

Also, after becoming the first Korean to become the head of Interpol at the Dubai General Assembly held in the same year, he emphasized ‘communication and balance’ and received wide support from member countries.

In particular, President Kim focused on closing loopholes in the international safety net by presenting the vision of ‘bridging the gap between member countries for a safer world’ and bridging the gap in the security power of member countries in marginalized regions such as Asia, Africa, South Pacific, and Latin America.

In addition, as the chairman of the General Assembly and Executive Committee, which is the core policy-making body of Interpol, he directly presided over the meeting, expanding Interpol’s foundation by reforming Interpol’s governance structure, establishing regional offices in the Caribbean and the Middle East, and establishing the World Police Day on Duty.

In addition, by introducing ‘I-CORE’, a mid- to long-term competency development program that utilizes advanced information and communication technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, the Interpol communication network and database advancement have been promoted.

In the context of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), we have proactively cooperated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and major member states to lead global crackdown activities targeting crimes and illegal distribution of medical products such as test kits and vaccines.

Under President Kim’s tenure, cooperation between the Korean government and Interpol has also been greatly strengthened.

The National Police Agency has been supporting the Interpol project to respond to economic crimes such as child sexual exploitation and phone fraud since last year.

President Kim said in his remarks, “The foundation of trust for Interpol will continue to be based on the core values of organizational operation, such as ‘checks and balance’ and ‘the rule of law’, which have been maintained for a long time.

On the other hand, Woo Jong-soo, director of the National Police Agency’s Criminal Inspection Service, who challenged the election of the Interpol executive committee, suffered a hardship this time.
