Kimchi steamed pao chai?… Song Jia, fake, followed by Chinese YouTube labeling controversy

Following the controversy over wearing fake luxury goods, YouTuber Song Jia (Freesia, 25) was revealed to have labeled kimchi as pao chai in the past, adding to the controversy. Song Ji-ah, who rose to stardom with Netflix’s ‘Solo Hell’, is unable to escape from the controversial hell.

On the 23rd, an online community pointed out that Song Jia had subtitled ‘pao chai’ (泡菜) instead of kimchi while introducing kimchi steamed on the ‘Freezia宋智雅’ channel operated by Bilibili, a Chinese version of YouTube.

Pao chai refers to salted Chinese cabbage, beans, and peppers. As one of the Northeast Projects, China has been making absurd claims that pai chai is the origin of kimchi and that the origin of kimchi is China.

The video in question was posted by Song Jia on the Bilibili channel in August 2020, and the 7-minute and 46-second video shows Song Jia taking a Chinese class and eating. Song Jia said, “I’m going to eat kimchi steamed like this when I get home,” but the caption was called “pao chai”, causing controversy.

As of the 24th, this video cannot be found. Regarding the controversy, the management company only said, “I’m sorry. I don’t have anything to tell you.”

In July of last year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism initiated the implementation of the revised ‘Guidelines for Foreign Language Translation and Writing of Public Terms’. The amendment proposed to change the Chinese translation and notation of kimchi to shinchi (辛奇) instead of pao chai (泡菜). The amended directive applies to publicity materials of the state and local governments. It is not enforced in the private sector.

The controversial Pao Chai video was before the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism was revised, and it could be the operator’s mistake, not Song Jia, that added Chinese subtitles. However, netizens are reacting critically, pointing out that Song Ji-ah has a crush on Chinese fans in the Bilibili video, calling them “Jaiya” and saying “Jaiya, woah, ni”.

Song Jia has been releasing videos made for Chinese fans, including only Chinese subtitles on YouTube videos on Billy Billie. The issue was raised that Song Ji-ah wore fake luxury clothes and jewelry such as Chanel, Dior, and Van Cleef & Arpels.

On the 17th, Song Jia admitted to using some fakes and apologized.
