Korea-Japan Defense Ministers Meeting “Strong condemnation of North Korea’s reconnaissance satellite launch, violation of UN resolution”

Both sides agreed to speed up discussions on pending issues between the South Korean and Japanese defense authorities, including measures to prevent this from happening again.

The defense ministers of South Korea and Japan strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of a long-range ballistic missile in the name of a satellite on May 31 as a serious violation of a UN Security Council resolution banning any launch using ballistic missile technology.

In order to prevent and respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, the two sides agreed to promote further security cooperation between South Korea and Japan, as well as between Korea and the United States and Japan. They agreed on the importance of promoting exchanges and cooperation at various levels in building trust between the South Korean and Japanese defense authorities.

In particular, they agreed to speed up consultations on pending issues between South Korean and Japanese defense authorities, including measures to prevent this from happening again.

The ROK and Japanese defense ministers agreed on the importance of ROK-Japan-ROK-US-Japan security cooperation to prevent North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific region.

As the Korean and Japanese leaders confirmed that the normalization of Korea-Japan relations is on track and agreed to develop the relationship to a higher level, the Korean and Japanese defense authorities also agreed to communicate closely to promote security cooperation.

The defense ministers of Korea and Japan also reaffirmed the importance of an international order based on international norms and rules. The two countries, which share universal values, also agreed to discuss regional and global challenges.

Prior to this, the defense ministers of Korea and Japan and US defense secretary Lloyd Austin held a defense ministerial meeting between Korea, the US and Japan on the 3rd and issued a joint press release.

He condemned North Korea’s reconnaissance satellite launch as a serious violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

South Korea, the United States and Japan agreed to implement a real-time missile warning information sharing mechanism within this year to improve the ability to detect and evaluate missiles launched by North Korea.

They pledged to hold regular defensive exercises, such as anti-submarine warfare drills and maritime missile defense drills, to strengthen the South Korea-US-Japan response posture against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

He also welcomed the recent normalization of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) between South Korea and Japan. They agreed on the recognition that building trust in defense-related trust between countries in the region is important. They agreed to deepen cooperation to institutionalize these efforts.
