KT will discuss compensation plans for wired and wireless Internet damage that occurred on the 25th through an emergency board meeting on the morning of the 29th. In the afternoon, while the government is scheduled to announce the results of the cause analysis, interest is focused on whether KT’s decision at the board of directors can be included in the announcement by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

KT CEO Koo Koo Koo held an emergency board meeting on the 29th to discuss compensation for the network paralysis. On the 25th, from 11:20 a.m. to 11:57 a.m., a temporary connection failure occurred in the nationwide KT wired and wireless internet for about 37 minutes. Although it was completely normalized at 12:45 p.m. on the same day, KT hastily announced the cause of the incident as DDoS, and then corrected it with a routing (network route setting) error, which was criticized by public opinion.

At that time, as KT’s wired and wireless Internet paralysis occurred during lunchtime, complaints from small business owners who were not able to do business properly and students who were taking online classes arose one after another. Accordingly, there were many voices calling for KT to come up with a compensation plan for the damage as soon as possible.

However, according to the terms and conditions of the three telecommunication companies, the standard for high-speed Internet damage compensation is 8 times the amount of the claim if the service is not provided for more than 3 hours in a row or if the service is not provided because the accumulated time in one month exceeds 6 hours. it is stipulated According to the terms and conditions, it is difficult to compensate for the damage caused by this incident, but criticism has arisen that the “3 hours” standard was established 19 years ago, so it is necessary to consider the current situation with increased dependence on the Internet.

On the 28th, KT announced that it would take moral responsibility and compensate for the damage that occurred nationwide, apart from the terms and conditions. Regarding the compensation issue at KT Hyehwa Tower in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the same day, CEO Koo said, “We are actively preparing compensation measures regardless of the terms and conditions and are in the process of negotiating,” he said. He added, “The current three-hour period was established a long time ago, and I think it is desirable that it should be improved at a time when there are many services that rely on non-face-to-face social and communication.”

The government is also reviewing amendments to the terms and conditions. Hong Jin-bae, director of network policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, met with reporters on the 26th and was asked, ‘Are there any intentions to raise the 3-hour standard according to the terms and conditions? urged them to set the right standards,” he said. “I think it is necessary to create guidelines that can be applied to other operators, not just KT’s problems,” he said.
