Kuwait City: A Kuwaiti criminal court has sentenced a lawyer and his client, an expatriate, to life in prison for trying to bribe an immigration official at the Kuwait International Airport. Both were sentenced to five years in prison. The lawyer has also been suspended for 10 years.
The lawyer approached an immigration official working at the airport’s departure terminal with a request to help an expatriate of Arab descent who had been issued arrest warrants by Kuwaiti police. The expatriate’s passport was required to be stamped as part of an attempt by the police and the government to help him escape. In return, the lawyer offered the officer a large sum of money.
But instead of accepting the bribe offer of the passport officer, the information was passed on to senior officials. The incident was immediately reported to the Criminal Investigation Department and the Financial Crimes Department. The passport officer asked the lawyer to stamp the passport as they suggested and return the money.
Police have arrested a lawyer and an expatriate wanted by security agencies who arrived at the airport to hand over money as per the agreement.
