The government announced a tough response to the general strike of the National Railways Trade Union, announced on the 2nd of next month.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong repeatedly took a strong stance against the railway union general strike, saying at the railway union strike preparation meeting held at the Korea Railway Corporation’s Busan-Gyeongnam Headquarters in Dong-gu, Busan on the afternoon of the 27th, “The railway belongs to the people, not to the railway corporation and the union.” Emphasized.

He said in the meeting that day, “The attitude of the railway union to ignore the inconvenience of the people in order to carry out their demands through the power of the system by the people will not be tolerated.”

“We will respond thoroughly in accordance with the law and the principles without compromising to the strike of the railway union which is going into the world of illegality,” he said.

Minister Won also mentioned the railway union’s warning to military service members who were sent in instead of the general strike.

The rail union previously warned about a notice posted in front of the door of the temporary trooper’s rest room to the effect “don’t take the driver’s rest facility and camp”, saying, “We will find out who threatened the troopers and make them pay a reasonable price.”

Regarding this, the railway union said in a press release that day, “We apologize to those who have been hurt by the inappropriate expression of the military soldiers being put in as deputies.”

Meanwhile, the rail union is due to go on general strike from the 2nd of next month, following the law-abiding strike on the 24th, urging the government to cut the workforce and stop the privatization plan. This is the first time in three years that the railway union has gone on strike since the 2019 strike to recruit workers for the 4th shift and 2nd shift.
