Large-scale clash between conservatives and progressives near the president’s office… “Resignation” vs “Investigation into Wen”

A large-scale rally of conservative and progressive groups continued late last night in front of the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul, but there were no feared clashes.

Progressive civic groups, such as the Candlelight Victory Conversion Action, held a “rally against the Yun Seok-yeol government” in front of Sungnyemun yesterday afternoon with an estimated 20,000 police and marched to the Yongsan presidential office, demanding the resignation of President Yoon and a special prosecutor in by Kim Kun-hee.

Thousands of members of the New Freedom Solidarity gathered in the triangle where the presidential office is located, and conservative groups such as the Freedom and Unification Party urged the prosecution to investigate former President Moon Jae-in and the leader of the Lee Jae-myung’s Democratic Party, with an estimated 33,000 police gathered in Gwanghwamun.

This is the first time since the relocation of the presidential office to Yongsan that conservatives and liberals have held a large-scale rally with tens of thousands of people near the Oval Office.

To prevent clashes between demonstrators, the police set up barriers and mobile dividers, and sent more than 6,500 police to Gwanghwamun and Yongsan.

Because of yesterday’s rally, most of Sejong-daero and Hangang-daero sections in Seoul were controlled, leading to extreme traffic congestion in the city on the weekend afternoon.
