Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung bowed his head in response to the Itaewon disaster, saying, “I deeply apologize for the responsibility for not properly protecting the lives and safety of the people.”

Representative Lee, who attended the high level meeting today at the National Assembly, wore a black suit and a ribbon with the word ‘commemoration’ written on his chest.

CEO Lee expressed his condolences, saying, “I cannot contain my tragic feelings about this unimaginable disaster.”

“I hope that not only the wounded, but also the people who have been hurt by witnessing the horrific scene at the scene and watching the tragic situation through the news will be healed and restore them to peace of mind as soon as possible, and the Democratic. The party will work hard to make that happen,” he said.

He also said, “Now is the time to do everything we can to deal with the incident and comfort the victims and their families,” he said. However, for now, it is time to put all our efforts into redress and comfort.”

He asked the government, “I would appreciate it if you would focus on doing your best to resolve the situation with the attitude that everything is my responsibility, rather than making people angry with the attitude of ‘I am not responsible, I did what I had to do’.”

The previous day, Interior and Security Minister Lee Sang-min was indirectly criticized for commenting at a government briefing that “a large crowd of people was not to be particularly concerned.”

Park Hong-geun, the leader of the floor, also said at the meeting, “Resolving the accident, commemorating the victims, and recovering the wounded are the most urgent priorities.”

However, Park said, “There are many people who pointed out that he was a talented person who could have been stopped.” He emphasized, “We need to carefully examine whether there are any deficiencies in precautionary measures, safety management, and initial response to accidents, and resolve the public’s doubts and concerns.”

Democratic Party leaders, including Chairman Lee, will visit and pay tribute to the victims of the Itaewon disaster at 11 am today at Noksapyeong Station Square in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
