According to the Ministry of Justice on the 21st, the correctional headquarters restricted receptions at all correctional facilities nationwide during the Chuseok holiday to prevent Corona 19. Face-to-face as well as phone interviews were not permitted.

The correctional authorities said, “Considering social distancing, we ask for your understanding that we will not hold interviews to prevent group infections and the spread of infectious diseases in correctional facilities.”

The correctional authorities also decided not to hold the joint turn that was held at the minimum on Chuseok last year this year. However, instead of interviews, non-face-to-face edification events such as video family interviews and sending letters and gifts will be held.

A separate ‘special meal’ is provided for the Chuseok day meal of the inmates, including the two former presidents, in commemoration of the holiday.

Former President Park, who is imprisoned in Seoul Detention Center, is provided with morning bread, lettuce salad, soup, and soy milk on the morning of Chuseok. Here, as a special meal for Chuseok, in the morning, assorted brown rice gangjeong, medicine, and 1 bag are provided.

Former President Lee’s breakfast menu at Anyang Prison is soup, hot dog buns, frankfurters, coleslaw and milk. For lunch, cabbage miso soup and beef noodle soup are served. In the evening, pork pumpkin stew and rice cake stir-fry are served. As a Chuseok special, peach and mango juice are served with lunch.

In January, former President Park was sentenced to 20 years in prison and a fine of 18 billion won and a fine of 3.5 billion won at the Supreme Court. Former President Lee was sentenced to 17 years in prison and a fine of 13 billion won on charges of embezzling Das funds and bribing Samsung.

If a special pardon is not granted, former President Park will be released from prison in 2039, when he turns 87, and Lee will be released from prison in 2036, when he turns 95.
