Middlesex reached 279-5 on April 3, 2026, during a truncated first day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire at Lord’s.

Captain Leus du Plooy anchored the innings, finishing the day unbeaten on 98. The South African-born left-hander produced a classy performance that included 10 fours.

Du Plooy shared an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 85 with Joe Cracknell, who remained unbeaten on 58. Earlier in the day, Du Plooy had also put on 84 runs in a stand with Max Holden.

Difficult Conditions at Lord’s

The match began under gloomy conditions, characterized by murky skies and morning rain. Because the lights were required from the start of play, Gloucestershire elected to bowl first.

The opening period of the match was attritional for Middlesex. Opening batsmen Sam Robson and Josh de Caires struggled to find their rhythm, accumulating runs slowly.

Robson faced 93 deliveries before hitting his first boundary through cover. Gloucestershire nearly secured an early breakthrough when Will Williams dropped a catch from Robson that had carried to backward square.

The first wicket fell when Josh de Caires was strangled out. James Bracey took a fine low catch off the bowling of Matt Taylor.

Rain interrupted the proceedings, leading to an early lunch. Shortly after the resumption of play, Will Williams claimed his first wicket in Gloucestershire colors by trapping Sam Robson in front with a fuller delivery.

Bowling and Fielding Performances

Will Williams performed well on his debut, finishing the first day with figures of 2-46. Fellow debutant Gabe Bell, from Tasmania, also contributed with figures of 1-44.

Bowling and Fielding Performances

Despite the bowling efforts, Gloucestershire’s fielding was costly. The visitors dropped three catches during the day, errors that may have altered the complexion of the match.

Observers noted that the Gloucestershire bowlers were occasionally short in length and delivered too many balls down the leg side.

Context and History

Leus du Plooy has a history of strong performances against Gloucestershire. In the final match of the previous season at Lord’s, he recorded a career-best 263 not out against the same opponents.

Du Plooy was named the Middlesex captain midway through the 2025 season. His leadership on April 3, 2026, saw him shift the pace of the match immediately upon his entrance, hitting his first delivery through midwicket for four.

Middlesex enters this season after finishing fourth in the Division Two table in 2025, ending that campaign 11 points short of the promotion places.
