MADRID: Robert Lewandowski was keen to play for Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid before he made a big-money move to Spanish giants Barcelona this season. At the end of the negotiations that seemed to have led to Madrid several times in his career, the transfer did not materialize.
Why did Lewandowski finally sign for arch-rivals Real Barcelona? “When I realized that Barcelona wanted me so much, I realized that this transfer was more realistic than the previous transfer negotiations with Real Madrid. It has always been my dream to live in Spain and play in La Liga. Lewandowski said in an interview with Sport One that he inspired me not only athletically but also personally.
“There have been many discussions with Royal in the past. However, nothing came to fruition’ – revealed the Polish striker. While playing for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the German League, Lewandowski was being chased by Real Madrid. A copy of the contract presented by Royal to the player in 2013 was later circulated on the internet. Lewandowski publicly expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid in an interview with a Spanish media outlet in 2018.
