LG Electronics Completes ‘SBTi Verification’ for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target

LG Electronics (www.lge.co.kr) is accelerating its achievement of ‘carbon-neutral 2030’ as its greenhouse gas reduction target has recently been verified by SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative).

SBTi is a global coalition organization co-founded by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Research Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2015. have.

In July, LG Electronics announced that it would participate in ‘Business Ambition for 1.5℃’, a global campaign to achieve Net Zero by reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the first time among domestic companies. This campaign aims to preemptively respond to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which limits the increase in global average temperature to within 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

The GHG reduction targets set by LG Electronics in line with this campaign are not only direct GHG emissions (Scope 1) and indirect GHG emissions (Scope 2) generated during the product production stage, but also GHG emissions (Scope) generated during the product use stage (Scope). 3) is included.

In accordance with the reduction goal, LG Electronics plans to reduce the total amount of direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2) during the product production stage by 54% compared to the 2017 level by 2030. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 3) in the product use stage will be reduced by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020.

LG Electronics has verified this reduction target based on scientific evidence from SBTi. In particular, LG Electronics is the first domestic home appliance company to receive SBTi verification.

LG Electronics recently participated in the ‘Route to Net Zero Asia’ conference hosted by the British Carbon Trust, the only Korean company to share activities for carbon neutrality as an excellent company in reducing greenhouse gas and certification cases of eco-friendly products. .

The Carbon Trust is a non-profit professional organization established in the UK in 2001 to respond to climate change and reduce carbon. After comprehensively measuring carbon emissions and water consumption in the entire process of production, transportation, use, and disposal of products, the carbon footprint and water footprint are certified according to international examination standards.

Starting with TVs in 2011, LG Electronics is receiving carbon footprint and water footprint certifications for various products such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, and is continuously expanding the number of certified products.

In addition, it has set a goal to use a total of 600,000 tons of recycled plastics from this year to 2030 in order to realize carbon neutrality and a circular economy. In addition, the amount of electronic waste to be recovered from 2006 to 2030 has been raised from 4.5 million tons to 8 million tons.

In particular, in order to expand the positive impact on the environment, GHG emissions are reduced throughout the product life cycle, from the product development stage to the disposal stage. It is expected that the various activities that the company participates in to solve environmental problems will help future generations to enjoy a better life and the company will continue its sustainable management.

Kim Jun-ho, vice president of LG Electronics’ Quality Management Center, said, “This verification has shown that LG Electronics is sincerely contributing to the environment and fulfilling its social responsibility. We plan to continue to introduce products that contribute.”
