LG Electronics is one step closer to the ‘6G era’. It succeeded in transmitting and receiving 100m wireless data outdoors using the 6G terahertz (THz) band.
Developing a power amplifier to solve 6G communication difficulties
According to LG Electronics on the 19th, the company succeeded in transmitting a communication signal outdoors at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Research Center in Berlin, Germany on the 13th using the 6G THz band at a straight-line distance of 100m or more.
THz wireless transmission/reception technology utilizes a frequency band between 100 gigahertz (GHz) and 10 THz to enable transmission rates of up to 1 terabit per second (1 Tbps, a transmission rate of 1 trillion bits per second). This technology is considered to be a key technology that will meet the needs of 6G mobile communication.
It’s only 100m away, but it doesn’t mean much. An LG Electronics official explained, “If the frequency is raised to THz for 6G implementation, the frequency reach decreases and power loss increases.
A power amplifier is an essential device to increase the communication distance by amplifying a signal in a mobile communication environment. The newly developed power amplifier raises the output signal up to 15dBm, the world’s highest level, to enable stable transmission and reception in the band range of 155 to 175 GHz.
6G expected to be commercialized in 2029… Competition from leading companies
6G (transfer rate of 1 Tbps) is theoretically 50 times faster than 5G (maximum data rate of 20 Gbps). 6G is expected to be commercialized in 2029, starting with discussions on standardization around 2025.
There is a view from some in Korea that ‘5G doesn’t work properly, what 6G’, but leading global companies are already jumping into the competition for 6G technology.
Following the establishment of the ‘LG-KAIST 6G Research Center’ in cooperation with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 2019, LG Electronics secured core 6G technology by strengthening collaboration with Keysight, a global wireless communication test and measurement equipment manufacturer, earlier this year. is accelerating to
Previously, Samsung Electronics also succeeded in transmitting and receiving communication systems in the 6G THz band in June. At that time, Samsung Electronics and California State University of Santa Barbara (UCSB) succeeded in demonstrating data transmission indoors 15 meters away from the transmitter and receiver using the THz band, 140 GHz.
Samsung Electronics established the Next-Generation Communication Research Center under Samsung Research in 2019 and is conducting research on 5G competitiveness and advanced 6G technologies.
Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global standardization and technology development ecosystem by accelerating research on 6G technology by releasing the ‘6G White Paper’ last year based on the technology it has accumulated over the years, including the world’s first 5G commercialization.
