Malaysian PM resigns 16Aug2021

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned after losing a majority in parliament. He came to power 18 months ago. Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmed Shah, who accepted the resignation, appointed Muhiuddin as the caretaker Prime Minister.

The government lost a majority after 15 members of the ruling UMNO withdrew their support. Two ministers in the party had earlier resigned. Muhyiddin said he hoped the Kovid vaccine supply would continue until it was completed and the economy recovered, but was blocked by the authorities.

The king has told the people that elections are not possible in the extreme situation of Kovid expansion and that they should wait till the end of political problems. Muhyiddin came to power with a slim majority in March last year. Muhyiddin has been widely criticized for his failures in the Kovid defense.
