Madrid: La Liga has started an investigation into racial abuse against Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian player was racially abused by Mallorca fans during the away game. Footage emerged of the crowd calling Vinicius a monkey. La Liga said in a press release that the act was unacceptable and that fans should also help find the perpetrators.
This is the fourth time that Vinicius has been racially abused in his opponent’s field. Earlier, a similar incident took place in the stadiums of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valladolid. Meanwhile, Vinicius refused to comment on the incident. A statue of Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior was hung over the bridge ahead of the Copa del Rey semi-final between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. There was also a police investigation into the incident. A statue wearing a Vinicius Jr shirt was hung alongside a banner that read ‘Madrid hates Real Madrid’.
The Spanish league, the Atlético team and Real have condemned the incident raised by Colum. Earlier, Vinicius Junior’s goal celebration was also the subject of great controversy when Atlético fans racially abused him. Valladolid fans had also come out against Vinicius earlier. Vinicius Jr has previously accused La Liga authorities of not doing anything to stop racist abuse towards players.
