After being a vital part of Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield for many years, Marco Verratti (30) is on the verge of making a move to Al Arabi in Qatar. The transfer has sparked speculation about the potential role of Lee Kang-in (22) in the team.

French publication ‘L’Equipe’ reported on September 1st that Verratti’s transfer to Qatar’s prestigious Al Arabi is imminent. PSG and Al Arabi have already reached an agreement on the terms of the transfer and are currently finalizing the details. This transfer marks the end of Verratti’s illustrious 11-year career in Paris.

The media also revealed that Julian Draxler, PSG’s attacking midfielder who was loaned out to Benfica last season, is expected to follow Verratti to Al Arabi.

According to France’s ‘RMC Sports’, Verratti’s transfer fee is set at 45 million euros (approximately 65.7 billion won). PSG initially aimed for a fee of up to 60 million euros (about 87.6 billion won), but both clubs have reached a satisfactory agreement.

Although Verratti had received interest from Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli during the summer transfer window, he ultimately made the decision to move to Qatar instead of Saudi Arabia. Al-Ahli had previously offered 30 million euros (approximately 43.8 billion won) for the midfielder, but the bid was rejected by PSG. Al-Hilal, who recently signed Neymar, also made a bid of 45 million euros (about 65.7 billion won), but the transfer did not materialize.

Verratti, who has played 10 seasons at PSG since 2012, is a seasoned veteran in midfield. Known for his exceptional passing, defensive skills, and technique, he has been referred to as PSG’s “football guru”. However, under coach Luis Enrique’s vision of rejuvenating the team with young talents, Verratti has gradually lost his place in the starting lineup.

Lee Kang-in’s Potential Role in Replace of Verratti Garners Interest

Domestic fans are also eagerly following Verratti’s transfer as it could mean a significant change in Lee Kang-in’s position on the field. With the possibility of playing in the attacking midfielder role that Verratti previously occupied, Lee Kang-in’s transition has become a topic of discussion.

In the opening and second rounds of League 1 before his injury, Lee Kang-in played as a right-sided striker and left-sided striker respectively. Some experts speculate that based on his previous experience as a midfielder in Mallorca and his similar creative abilities to Verratti, such as precise passing, pressing, and wide vision, Lee Kang-in might switch to a midfield role.

Last month, France’s ‘Onje Mondial’ reported that PSG has identified Lee Kang-in as the creative midfielder to replace Verratti. The report explained that if Kylian Mbappe and Usman Dembele play on the wings, there might be instances where Lee Kang-in does not feature in the lineup. Given his creativity and the ability to fill Verratti’s shoes, Lee Kang-in’s versatility is highly valued.

With Bernardo Silva recently signing a new contract with Manchester City, the likelihood of Lee Kang-in playing in midfield has increased. Currently recovering from a left quadriceps (thigh) injury sustained after the second round of League 1 against Toulouse on the 20th, Lee Kang-in is focusing on treatment and rehabilitation. It remains to be seen whether Lee Kang-in will transform into the central midfielder after the break and form a formidable partnership with Mbappe and Dembele up front.
