WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) – Massachusetts town is sick of the homeowners and businesses that are undertaking the beaches from free landscaped materials.
Westport coastal communities therefore approved a town bye-law which would impose a $ 250 fine on people taking rocks or vegetation from town-owned beaches.
Seán Leach, Vice President of Westport Beach Committee, said he saw people and commercial lands filling trucks with rocks they used for fire pits, rock gardens and driveway aprons.
He says that people take winter berries and other vegetation for use as Christmas decoration.
The rock crusher affects the resilience of the beaches, which is important for the protection of the coast.
The town plans to erect signs in beach areas reminding people of the direction.
