(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kyung-yun Kim = ‘Living Legend’ Max Scherzer (37, Los Angeles Dodgers) achieved the 19th record of 3,000 strikeouts in MLB history.

Scherzer started the home game against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California on the 13th (Korean time) and played one hit, three strikeouts, nine strikeouts in eight innings, leading the team to an 8-0 victory.

Scherzer, who had struck out 2,994 strikeouts before that day, increased the career strikeout record he had set since 2008 to 3,000 by striking out Eric Hosmer with a 143km/h changeup in the fifth inning.

It was a perfect pitch. He performed ‘perfect pitching’ in which no one allowed on base until the 7th inning. The hit by Hosmer in the 8th inning was the only flaw that day.

In the second inning, he set a record by striking out all three batters.

Scherzer is considered one of the best strikeout pitchers in the world. With an overwhelming stance and sharp slider, he threatens opponents.

From 2009 to 2019, the second year of his MLB debut, he struck out triple-digits every year without missing a single occasion.

From 2016 to 2018, he won the strikeout championship for three consecutive years, and in 2018 he struck out a whopping 300.

Last year, in a 60-game shortened season, he struck out 92.

On May 12, 2016, while playing for the Washington Nationals, he set a record with 20 strikeouts in nine innings, the fifth in history against the Detroit Tigers.

Scherzer isn’t just a talented player. united with great fighting spirit.

He never backs down easily. In 2019, while playing for the Washington Nationals, he broke his nose and bruised his eyes during batting training, but started as scheduled against the Philadelphia Phillies and played seven innings without a score.

In the 2019 World Series with the Dodgers, after a neck injury, he received painkillers injections and went on the mound to lead Washington to victory.

The 37-year-old Scherzer is performing as well this year as in his prime.

While playing for Washington this season, he was traded to the Dodgers, who are aiming to win the World Series. So far, he has 14 wins, 4 losses and a 2.17 ERA in 27 games.

Meanwhile, the MLB record for most strikeouts is 5,714, set by legendary great pitcher Nolan Ryan.

In the KBO League, no player has yet struck out 3,000.

The record is 2,048, which former Hanwha Eagles coach Song Jin-woo achieved during his active career.

On this day, San Diego infielder Ha-Sung Kim did not play.
