Measles Cases More than Double in the Netherlands, Larger Outbreak Expected
The number of measles cases in the Netherlands more than doubled in the past year, and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) anticipates a larger outbreak is imminent due to declining vaccination rates.
In 2024, 205 cases of measles were reported in the Netherlands, a significant increase from the 539 cases reported in the previous year. For context, only 151 measles cases were reported in the Netherlands between 2015 and 2023, inclusive. As of January 8,2026,the RIVM states there is not yet a nationwide outbreak, but warns one is likely.
The RIVM expects a larger outbreak every 10 to 15 years. The last major outbreak occurred in 2013-2014, with 2,828 reported cases.
According to RIVM data, the decline in vaccination coverage is a primary driver of the increased risk. The RIVM provides further information on measles and current updates on their website: https://www.rivm.nl/mazelen/actueel
