Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou in accordance with the U.S. extradition arrest warrant in 2018. Soon after, Cumming Kai and Spafer were arrested by China and charged with crimes against China’s national security. Spafer was ruled overseas in August this year. He was convicted of spying and illegally providing state secrets and was sentenced to 11 years in prison, confiscation of personal property of RMB 50,000, and deportation. Earlier this month, on the eve of the detention of Kovrig and Spaffer for 1,000 days, their supporters held a rally in Canada to demand that China release their people.
