On the 6th of the 15th day of the Tokyo Olympics (Olympic Games), in the men’s 400m relay final on land, Japan was abandoned halfway because the baton did not pass from Shuhei Tada in the first run to Ryota Yamagata in the second run. He did not win medals for the second consecutive tournament.

Japan faced the same running order as Tada, Yamaken, Yoshihide Kiryu, and Yuki Koike. In the qualifying, he finished 3rd in a group of 38.16 seconds, which was the lowest among the 8 teams that advanced to the final.

The men’s 400m relay was the first to reach the podium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning a silver medal (moving up from 3rd place). Japan’s baton pass is said to be a “household art” and won silver at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and a bronze medal at the world championships in 2017 and 2019.
