“Men’s urination disorder and prostatic hyperplasia, risk of complications if left unattended” – Herald Economic Daily

Urinary disorders due to enlarged prostate can cause atrophy, depression, and sleep disturbance along with stress. These symptoms can also affect daily life and interpersonal relationships, but a bigger problem is the complications that can occur when BPH is left unattended.

[헤럴드경제=김태열 기자] BPH is a progressive disease in which the prostate gradually grows larger than its normal size. It starts in their 30s and is so common that it occurs in 50% of men in their 50s and more than 90% of those in their 80s.

Typical symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia are thinning of the urine stream, a feeling of residual urine as if urine remains in the bladder even after urinating, and delayed urination that occurs when you have to exert force or wait for a long time to urinate. In addition, if you have urgency to urinate, nocturia that causes you to urinate after waking up from sleep, frequent urination, and pain during urination, you may have an enlarged prostate.

Urinary disorders due to enlarged prostate can cause atrophy, depression, and sleep disturbance along with stress. These symptoms can also affect daily life and interpersonal relationships, but a bigger problem is the complications that can occur when BPH is left unattended.

If BPH is left untreated, acute urinary obstruction may occur and bladder or kidney function may decrease. Rarely, persistent urinary retention may cause bladder stones or bladder diverticulum formation, loss of renal function, urinary tract infection, and pyelonephritis, and may also affect sexual function such as erectile problems. Therefore, it is necessary to actively treat the occurrence of urination disorders.

If prostatic hyperplasia is confirmed, drug treatment is the first step. If drug treatment is not effective, other treatments are considered. The most popular treatment method is ‘prostatic artery embolization’. Prostatic artery embolization is a procedure that reduces the volume of the prostate by selectively blocking the blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the prostate without excising the prostate tissue, unlike conventional surgical methods.

In particular, it is highly evaluated in that there are no side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation because there is no damage to surrounding tissues such as the urethra and bladder. In Korea, the number of hospitals that were designated as a new medical technology by the Korea Health and Medical Center in 2016 and are being implemented in recognition of their effectiveness and safety is gradually increasing.

Director Jeong Hye-doo of the Human Radiology Center said, “It is suitable for patients who have difficulty in general anesthesia and patients who are burdened with surgery, and they can be discharged on the same day, so they can go back to their daily life immediately. “He said.
