[천지일보=임혜지 기자] German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged stricter restrictions, saying that the current surge in COVID-19 in Germany is worse than what it has experienced so far.

According to Yonhap News, Bloomberg News on the 22nd (local time), citing a source, said that Chancellor Angela Merkel told officials of her Christian Democratic Party (CDU) that the current situation is “very dramatic” and that unless the fourth wave weakens, the situation is “very dramatic”. Hospitals reported that they said they would soon become saturated.

Merkel said many citizens did not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation and called for 16 states to tighten restrictions, saying more people should be vaccinated but that is not enough.

In Germany, where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly, the medical system is also at risk of overload.

In response, the federal government and 16 state governments have agreed to a plan to restrict access to restaurants, bars, etc. Some states are re-applying restrictions, including the introduction of partial lockdowns.

Germany’s Health Minister Jens Span also warned that the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus will infect most of its unvaccinated citizens and some of them will die, the Associated Press reported.

Germany's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said that the number of new cases of COVID-19 in Germany reached an all-time high of 40,000, warning that another lockdown will be necessary if vaccination is not carried out quickly. “Perhaps by the end of this winter, almost everyone in Germany will have been vaccinated or have recovered or will die,” Spawn told reporters in Berlin.

“It’s true,” he added, “but this is very, very likely due to the highly contagious delta virus, which is why we are recommending vaccination so urgently,” he said.

Minister Spahn said that by the end of the year, 50 million doses of Moderna, Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines will be available, saying that residents will be able to receive the vaccine from the first dose to the booster shot when needed.

Germany has decided to suspend shipments of tens of millions of doses of the vaccine, originally intended to be sent to low-income countries. Undelivered items will be provided at a later date, Span explained.

Currently, 68% of the 83 million people in Germany have been vaccinated. Experts believe that this ratio should exceed 75%.
