Microsoft has introduced text recognition (OCR) in its Windows 11 capture tool. This new feature enables users to easily copy text from a screenshot and paste it into applications such as Word. Currently, the feature is only available to Windows Insider testers in the Canary and Dev channels, but if no major issues are found, it will be rolled out to all Windows 11 computers in the near future.
According to Dave Grochocki, senior product manager and head of Microsoft Inbox apps, the new feature called ‘Text Actions’ is accessible in Snipping Tool version 11.2308.33.0. Grochocki explains that the feature recognizes text in captured screenshots, making it simple and convenient to copy and share text from images or paste it into other applications.
To use the new ‘Text Actions,’ users can click the ‘Text Action’ button on the Snipping Tool’s toolbar to display selectable text. They can then use the mouse to select the desired text and copy it. Alternatively, users can also select and copy text using the ‘Copy All Text’ button on the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C.
The capture tool also provides an option to edit text in screenshots, including the ability to remove sensitive information. By clicking on ‘Quick Delete’ on the toolbar, any sensitive information like email addresses and phone numbers can be automatically deleted. Users can also hide specific text by selecting it and clicking ‘Remove Text’ in the right-click menu.
Overall, Microsoft’s new text recognition feature in the Windows 11 capture tool brings added functionality and convenience to users, allowing them to easily extract and edit text from screenshots.
