Ministry of Foreign Affairs “There was no request from the US to boycott the Beijing Olympics”

[이데일리 김미경 기자] Regarding the spread of the ‘diplomatic boycott’ movement for the Beijing Winter Olympics centered on US allies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 26th that “we have not received a request for consultation from the US.”

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We are holding the basic position that we hope that the Beijing Olympics will contribute to peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia and the world and become a turning point for improving inter-Korean relations.”

Earlier, US President Joe Biden announced on the 18th (local time) that the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics was “a matter under consideration.” Since then, foreign media reports have emerged that U.S. allies Britain, Australia and Canada are also considering a diplomatic boycott.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi also said at a meeting with Japanese media on the 25th that “we will make a decision based on comprehensive considerations at an appropriate time” regarding whether or not to boycott a diplomatic boycott. There are also observations that it may have thrown a message that it can be done.

If there is a diplomatic boycott, the delegation is dispatched, but the delegation composed of high-ranking officials from the government or political circles does not participate.
