The Ministry of National Defense said that it is in close consultation with the United States in consideration of the spread of Corona 19 and diplomatic efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula regarding the joint South Korea-U.S. joint exercise scheduled for next month.
“The timing, scale, and method of the second half of the joint command post training have not been finalized yet,” said Boo Seung-chan, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, in response to reports of observations of the suspension or reduction of drills due to the restart of inter-Korean communication lines.
“The ROK and the U.S. are closely consulting in consideration of the spread of COVID-19, maintaining the combined defense posture, creating conditions for OPCON transition, and supporting diplomatic efforts for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace,” the spokesperson said.
Deputy spokesman also said, “So far, we have not made any proposals for military talks with North Korea regarding the South Korea-U.S. joint exercise.”
