Ministry of National Defense, ‘Special BTS military service’ discussion, “You need to be careful about expanding the target”

The Ministry of National Defense announced on the 25th that it was “need to be cautious” about the amendment to the Military Service Act that is being discussed in the National Assembly, which allows special cases of military service for artists of popular culture who contribute greatly to the national interest.

At a regular briefing on the same day, Ministry of National Defense spokesman Boo Seung-chan said, “When it comes to the revision of the Military Service Act, it is inevitable to take into account situational variables. “What is happening right now is the rapid population decline,” he said.

In fact, recently, both inside and outside the military are being pointed out that, due to the decrease in military service resources due to the low fertility rate, “even those who would not have joined the military for reasons such as academic background or physical condition are enlisting in the past.”

Vice Spokesperson also said, “Social consensus is also necessary for a fair military service implementation.” “Considering this, it is difficult to choose the expansion of the art and sports personnel enlistment.” We are discussing amendments to the Military Service Act to include artists from popular culture who have a high contribution to the national interest in the selection target.

If the law is amended in this direction, it is highly likely that BTS members, who became the first Asian singers to win the grand prize at the American Music Awards (AMA), will be subject to application.
