First of all, Major League Baseball has partially revised the minimum wage increase plan. The minimum salaries for players with their 0th to 1st years of service time were proposed to be $615,000, an increase of $15,000 from the previous offer. Years 1 and 2 ($650,000) were unchanged for Years 2 and 3 ($700,000).
The plan to abolish the salary adjustment system, which had been opposed by the players’ union, was withdrawn. Previously, the management suggested introducing a system for calculating annual salary based on a formula instead of adjusting the salary. Here’s a $10 million bonus pool for players before they qualify for salaried adjustments.
The players’ union had previously called for an increase in the minimum salary to $775,000, an increase in the wealth tax cap from $210 million to $245 million, and an extension of the draft pick draw to eight teams. The bonus pool for players before they were eligible for salaried adjustments was asking for $105 million. There is still a large gap compared to the proposals made by the management.
It is encouraging that both sides are continuing negotiations while conceding some of their arguments. The previous day, the players’ union gave up the age-based request to acquire FA qualifications and withdrew a significant portion of the revenue-sharing system improvement plan.
During the negotiation process in December of last year, the management expressed its intention to refuse to accept three issues among the demands of the players’ union: obtaining an FA qualification, shortening the period for obtaining qualification for salary adjustment, and modifying the profit sharing system. They are trying to find a compromise for this.
