Modi must stop being a source of terror in Afghanistan: Modi; Taliban for international recognition

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on the international community to ensure that Afghanistan is not a source of fundamentalism and terrorism. Modi also called on the nations of the world to work together to bring about appropriate change in Afghanistan. Modi was addressing the Extraordinary G20 Summit on the situation in Afghanistan.

He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was important for Afghanistan. He called on the G20 nations to work together to improve the situation in Afghanistan, based on UN Security Council Resolution 2593.

Need international recognition: Taliban

The Taliban, the first face-to-face meeting between US and European Union representatives, has sought permission for international recognition. The European Union has pledged 1.2 billion euros in aid to the people of Afghanistan.

The Taliban, which came to power after the US withdrew from Afghanistan, has been urging the world community to seek international recognition and assistance in rehabilitating the Afghan people. The U.S. and EU representatives held face-to-face talks with the Taliban after an online meeting of G20 leaders on the rehabilitation of the Afghan people.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the world to unite to help Afghanistan recover from the recession. At the same time, he said, the Taliban had violated a pledge made to women and children in Afghanistan. European Commission Chairperson Ursula von Lane has announced the European Union’s plan to lift Afghanistan out of the recession. “The people of Afghanistan should not suffer the consequences of the actions of the Taliban,” she said.

Qatar mediated the talks in Doha. ‘The most important thing now is to engage in dialogue with the Taliban. Qatari Foreign Minister’s Ambassador Mutlaq al-Khatani said the priority should be to improve the living conditions and education of Afghans and restore trade ties.

EU spokeswoman Nabila Masourali said talks with the Taliban would help give women more respect and protect their rights. She added that only informal communication had taken place and that the interim government should not be considered approved. Earlier, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaki said the Taliban wanted to maintain good relations with all countries. He said only balanced international relations could save Afghanistan from instability.
