[キシナウ 10日 ロイター] – Pro-Western Prime Minister Gabrilitsa resigned on the 10th in the former Soviet Union of Moldova. He will resign a year and a half after taking up his post in August 2021, amid economic turmoil and the impact of Russia’s all-out attack on neighboring Ukraine.

President Sandhu approves Gabrielitsa’s resignation. Presidential adviser and former interior minister Dorin Lechan was nominated as his successor. He is expected to be elected in parliament soon.

In 2022, the European Union (EU) made Moldova a candidate for membership, but Russia has troops stationed in pro-Russian controlled areas in the east and is trying to block Moldova’s possible EU membership.

Lechan said he would press ahead with the move towards EU membership while rebuilding the economy. Issues such as how to respond to Russia’s attempts to destabilize the country are expected to become issues.

A Russian missile fired from the Black Sea flew over Moldova and NATO member Romania before landing in Ukraine. The Prime Minister resigned amid rising tensions.
