Morel mushrooms start coming up in Central Illinois

PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) – Mushrooms more attention mushrooms – your prey has evolved.

Tasty mushrooms are hard to find starting in Central Illinois. Illinois Morel Mushrooms tracking page reports the first Morel mushroom spotting in Tazewell County, near Pekin North.

Mushrooms usually begin on the southern part of the state earlier in the spring, spreading north as the season progresses.

Hunting for spongy fungi is not a task for newcomers. Mushrooms are often found in wooded areas, although they can sometimes be found in the open.

The University of Illinois has tips to differentiate more from so-called “fake cultures” but they can be poisonous, or even bad. Genuine mushrooms have a mushroom and a hollow top.
