Mother and son unaware of the danger lurking in the snow; Polar bear anger attack Alaska

SMummer Mayomick, 24, was out with her one-year-old son Clyde during heavy snow. They moved towards the health clinic which was 137 meters away. But they did not realize the danger lurking in the snow. They were victims of the largest polar bear attack in Alaska in 30 years. The incident happened near a prominent school in Wales.

At the time of the accident, several school staff tried to scare the polar bear away but to no avail. Terrified by the polar bear, the mother and son tried to climb back to the school in vain. Principal Don Hendrickson locked the school entrance and saved countless lives. The son also shot and killed the polar bear, which was staying close to his mother.

Following the tragedy, school holidays were declared on Wednesday. In 2019, the US Geological Survey, conducted by researchers in Alaska, detected changes in sea ice cover. It is believed that this is the reason why the polar bears are more active on land.

A report from the US Fish and Wildlife Service states that polar bears are the giants of the bear class. Male bears weigh between 270 and 540 kg. Female polar bears weigh between 180 and 320 kg. Polar bears can grow up to ten feet in length. Seals and others are the main food. Polar bears are a species protected under the Endangered Species Act 2008. The Marine Mammal Protection Act also makes it an offense to harm them except in human self-defence.
