Kozhikode: Music director and Carnatic musician Kaithapram Viswanathan (58) has passed away. He died while undergoing treatment for cancer. He has composed music for 32 films. The background music for the film Kannaki won the 2001 State Film Award. Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri is the brother of song writer and music director.

He was born in Kaithapram village near Mathamangalam in Kannur district to Kannadi Keshavan Namboothiri and Aditi Antarjan, a famous musician and a disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. He was a music teacher at Mathamangalam School and Neeleswaram Rajas High School. Later he started a music school in Payyanur under the name of Sruthilaya. He lived in Thiruvannoor, Kozhikode for a long time. Burial will be with official honors today at 9 am at Thiruvannoor Kovilakam Cemetery.

Viswanathan Jayaraj, who came to cinema as an assistant music director in Jayaraj’s ‘Deshadanam’, became an independent music director for the first time in ‘Kannaki’. Other important films are Brightness, Loneliness, In the Name of God, Midsummer and Kaustubham. Notable songs include Karineelakannazhaki (Kannaki), Kayyettum Doore Oru Kuttikkalam (Loneliness), Neeyoru Puzhayayi, Enikoru Pennundu (Thilakkam) Adeti Adateti Alilakkiliye (Ullam). He has acted in the movie Kaustubham. Wife: Gauri Antharjanam (Kanhangad Alampadi). Children: Aditi, Narmada and Keshav. Other siblings: Vasudevan Namboothiri (Ernakulam), Thankam (Neeleswaram-Pallikkara, Karakkad), late Saraswathi.
