Nadal advanced to the second round of the men’s singles after defeating Marcos Giron of the United States in straight sets in the first round. Score: 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Nadal’s opponent will be Australia’s Tanasi Kokkinakiso or Germany’s Yannick Hanfmano. Nadal, the world number six, is the most likely player to win the title because of Novaz Djokovic’s absence. This is Nadal’s 70th victory at the Australian Open.
In the women’s singles, world number one Ashley Barty of Australia defeated Lesia Surenko of Ukraine. Barty won the first round by straight sets. The score was 6-0, 6-1.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka defeated Colombia’s Camilla Osorio in straight sets. The score was 6-3, 6-3. Osaka is also the reigning women’s singles Australian Open champion.
