NATO Secretary General Warns of Protracted War in Ukraine and Confirms Ukraine’s Membership in NATO

Frankfurt, 17 September – In a recent interview with Funke Media Group, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), issued a warning about the war in Ukraine, stating that it is unlikely to end quickly. Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of preparing for a protracted conflict, as most wars tend to last longer than anticipated. While everyone hopes for a swift resolution and lasting peace, Stoltenberg highlighted the dire consequences if either party were to cease fighting at this moment. He stated that if President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainians were to stop fighting, they would risk losing their country entirely. On the other hand, if President Vladimir Putin and the Russians were to lay down their weapons, peace could be achieved.

In addition to discussing the ongoing war in Ukraine, Stoltenberg addressed Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO. He confidently declared that Ukraine will definitely become a member, as agreed upon at the NATO Summit. However, he emphasized that NATO must ensure the stability of Ukraine once the conflict is resolved, in order to prevent history from repeating itself. The NATO leaders agreed during their summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July that Ukraine would be admitted into NATO once certain conditions are met.
