BAGHDAD – A new government has been formed in Iraq after a year of political uncertainty. The 21 member cabinet took office under the leadership of Muhammad Shia Al Sudani.
The new government was formed by the Coordination Framework, a coalition of pro-Iranian parties. The Coordination Framework was dominated by the resignation of all MPs of Shiite leader and anti-Iranian party Muqtada al-Sadr.
In the elections held in October last year, Muqtada al-Sadr’s party won more seats but failed to form a government. Nor was Sadr ready to form an alliance with other pro-Iranian parties. Meanwhile, Al-Sadr announced that he was leaving politics.
At the same time, the agitation led by the anti-Iran faction continues. Protesters and police have clashed in many cities in recent days. There is also public anger against the growing corruption.
