JBL has rolled out a significant update to its flagship Tour ONE M3 headphones and Tour PRO 3 earbuds, introducing a refined sound curve as the centerpiece of broader enhancements to audio performance and user experience. The changes, announced by HARMAN, JBL’s parent company, are available immediately via a free firmware update for existing owners of the Tour ONE M3.
The new JBL sound curve builds upon the established Harman Target Curve as a foundation but incorporates refinements based on evolving listener expectations. According to JBL, modern listeners are more sensitive to audio imbalances, experience fatigue more quickly, and demand greater clarity and control from premium audio products. The updated tuning aims to deliver a more natural and immersive sound across music genres while preserving vocal presence and avoiding excessive bass emphasis.
Specific technical adjustments include a 3 to 5 dB gain in the 4–8 kHz frequency range to improve clarity and presence in the upper mids, along with approximately 2 dB of attenuation in the lower midrange to reduce muddiness. These changes were validated through consultations with audio experts, representative listening panels, and independent testing conducted by Force Technology’s SenseLab.
JBL describes the goal of the new curve as achieving a sound reproduction that is more faithful to the artistic intent, with a defined soundstage, clearer vocals, and tighter bass control. The company positions the update as an application of audio science to close the gap with competitors like Sony and Bose, rather than relying on new hardware.
In addition to the sound curve refinement, JBL has introduced a new green colorway with copper accents for both the Tour ONE M3 headphones and Tour PRO 3 earbuds. This finish is launching in mid-May 2026 in the UK and Europe, though it will not be available in North America.
The Tour PRO 3 earbuds also receive a redesigned user interface, including updates to the main unit and the Smart TX control unit, aimed at simplifying access to key functions. The charging case features an updated touchscreen interface as part of the usability improvements.
JBL’s 80th anniversary Playback Tour in Los Angeles served as the venue for announcing these updates. The company emphasized that the firmware update for the Tour ONE M3 is being provided free of charge to existing users, reinforcing its commitment to improving the user experience post-purchase.
These updates reflect JBL’s ongoing effort to refine its premium audio offerings through software-driven enhancements, focusing on tonal balance, clarity, and real-world usability rather than hardware overhauls.
