The United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have launched an unofficial organization to strengthen economic and diplomatic cooperation with Pacific island countries, Reuters reported.
The name of the organization is ‘Partners in the Blue Pacific (PBP)’.
The White House announced the launch of the PBP through its website.
It is interpreted as a move to contain China, which has recently been expanding its power in the Pacific.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited seven Pacific island countries last month, seeking to expand China’s influence.
Two days before Wang Yi’s visit, President Joe Biden announced the official launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) while visiting Japan.
IPEF, in which 13 countries participated, also has the character of an economic alliance led by the United States to contain China by excluding China from the high-tech supply chain.
It is known that more senior officials will be sent to Pacific island countries to strategically respond to China’s escalating intervention in the Pacific region.
In the midst of this, it was found that 13 other countries in addition to the 5 BRICS countries participated in the video conference held by China to promote the expansion of BRICS’ borders against the West.
The 13 countries include 5 countries in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific region, including Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Fiji. Among them, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are IPEF participating countries.
Amid the global economic crisis originating from Ukraine, the competition for hegemony between the US and China in the Indo-Pacific region is heating up.
