FARGO – Prairie St. John has been working on a new $ 47 million hospital which will come forward with the demolition of adjacent buildings, reflecting the end of the hospital in service for over a hundred years.
The new psychiatric hospital will have 128 beds, up from the existing 110, with residential and hospital care space.
The demolition of the adjacent building is expected to commence in October, and construction of the new hospital is due to commence in the next spring. The new hospital, which will be located close to Prairie St. Park, is expected to open. John near Island Park, in mid-2021.
The new 106,000 sq ft building, less than the current 150,000 sq ft, will bring improvements to patients and staff and will be more efficient to operate, said Jeff Herman, CEO of Prairie St. John.
"The right thing is to do it and the right time to do it," he said. Utility costs will be reduced by an estimated $ 150,000 to $ 200,000 per year.
To accommodate the new hospital, Prairie St. John's east RiversEdge empty facility, located at 355 3rd Ave. S. Patient care will not be affected during the construction, said hospital administrators. When the new hospital opens, the existing building will be demolished and replaced by additional parking space.
Executives considered that they could build the town center because of the new costs of Pririe St.. John in southern Fargo, but had a high cost of land acquisition and tradition to be located near Island Park.
"St. John's Prairie is involved in this space," Herman said. "This is our history, this is our future."
The new hospital is being designed to match the historic Hawthorne Elementary School neighborhood, with many bricks. Limit height restrictions will add to the new building to four stories, so Herman, who is likely to increase pods to the north, said any future expansion.
"We don't want to build a steel building and glass," he said.
The new hospital will provide specialized programs, including a series of electrovulsive therapy and treatment receiving medical help from a doctor.
“Prairie St. John has taken care of our community for over 100 years, ”said Herman. “The new hospital will maximize our patient treatment and care space and there will be a significant increase in natural design and health-related health care to improve our clinical treatment models.” T
The new hospital will also provide a “enhanced and expanded” one-day program and outpatient care. It will facilitate greater collaboration between multidisciplinary teams, Herman said, including psychiatrists, internal medical practitioners, clinical pharmacists, social workers, psychologists and therapists.
“The future hospital is giving the best service to patients,” he said.
The Pririe St. team has a staff of approximately 400 employees. John and caters for approximately 6,700 patients per year.
Mayor Tim Mahoney asked that Prairie St. was a “vital element of the Fargo health care system”. John in a statement of congratulations to the announcement of the new hospital.
“As the largest facility of its kind in this region, Prairie St. is very popular. John provided a full range of healthcare services to all sectors of our community, ”said Mahoney.
Prairie St. was established. John 's, 510 4th St.. S., in 1997 and provides behavioral health services for children, adolescents and adults. The hospital was made a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, based in Pennsylvania, in 2010.
The original building of St. Prairie was built in 1904 as St. John's Hospital by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Minneapolis. It is located on the site of the residence of the late Bishop John Shanley, who replaced St. John's Hospital which was built in 1900.
The hospital had 87 beds when they were built in 1904. A nurse training school, and a nursing home, opened across the street two years later. Significant additions were made to the hospital in the 1960s, and many internal refurbishments were carried out to the building in the years.
