New York, the largest number of new confirmed cases in the U.S.… “Omicron will become dominant”

New York State, the United States, has set a new record for the number of new cases of COVID-19 in one day, exceeding 20,000.

According to Bloomberg News, the number of new confirmed cases in New York State on the 17th local time was about 21,000, exceeding the previous record of 19,900 in January.

New York State’s number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients doubled to 3,800 at the beginning of last month, with 60 new daily deaths.

The rapid increase in COVID-19 in the northeastern part of the United States, including New York State, is analyzed as a result of the simultaneous spread of the existing delta mutation and the new mutation, Omicron.

The more contagious Omicron mutation accounts for 13.1% of all confirmed cases in New York and New Jersey, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated.

Rochelle Wallensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that while delta mutations are still circulating widely, omicron mutations are rapidly increasing and “will become the dominant species in the United States in a few weeks.”
