As per annual tradition, the BBC always puts ten artists in the spotlight at the beginning of January, who they believe have everything to break through. In 2022, Lola Young took fourth place at BBC Sound Of 2022 and her path seemed open to conquer the big stages with her rock solid voice. Just before her long-awaited debut album is released in May, TikTok seems to want to help her with that, because she now reaches millions of views with her videos, and her music has already been picked up by Bella Hadid and Kylie Jenner, among others.
“What Is It About Me” is on the emotional side and has a specific roughness that only adds to it. The instrumentation is initially limited to bass guitar, piano and drums, so that all the focus in the stanzas is on Young’s ravishing voice. Every time the chorus builds up, the song breaks open and she unpacks a bit more vocally. “What Is It About Me” is not a polished tearjerker, but that makes it all the more penetrating.
