Stockholm: 2022 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the Swedish scientist Swante Paebu. The prize is for critical discoveries about human evolution. Nobel Committee Secretary Thomas Perlman announced the winner at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Swante Pebu, aged 67, who was born in Sweden, for his work on extracting DNA from human bones dating back nearly 40,000 years. The Nobel Prize Committee announced that Swante Pebou was selected for the prize for his study of the genetic structure of extinct hominins and human evolution.

It was under his leadership that the DNA structure of Neanderthal humans was discovered and the branch of paleogenetics was formed. Hominins include species considered to be human, human ancestors, or closely related to humans.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to American scientists David Julius and Ardem Pataputyan in 2021. They were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the receptors that help the brain to sense temperature and touch. The award will be presented on 10 December.

The winners of the Nobel Prize will be announced between October 3 and 10. The awards are given to those who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics and peace. The prize money is 10 million Swedish crowns (Rs. 7.37 crores).
