North Korea shoots down ballistic missile – Japan alarmed

North Korea has tested another ballistic missile. Siren alarms went off briefly in Japan.

South Korea says North Korea has fired a ballistic missile. The rocket was launched in the direction of the East Sea, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on Thursday, citing the South Korean general staff. The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.

The Japanese prime minister’s office said on Twitter that North Korea may have launched a ballistic missile. There had previously been fears that the missile could head for the island of Hokkaido. “Evacuate immediately. Evacuate immediately,” the government issued an initial warning, urging Hokkaido residents to seek shelter in a building or underground. A short time later, the Coast Guard gave the all-clear. It is assumed that the rocket fell far away into the sea. In recent weeks, North Korea has fired a number of missiles and says it has also tested an underwater nuclear drone.
